All About Agents

Whether or not you decide to use an agent you still need to know what agents do, and how book contracts work. The following books will help you do both. They will also assist you if you decide to be your own agent. If you are representing yourself, be very careful. Just one word, for example using "sell" instead of "license," or "book stock" instead of "book stock and pages" can mean the difference between earning and losing thousands of dollars.

Each of these books covers agents and contracts, with emphasis on different things. I have all of these books and find them very useful.

1001 Ways To Market Your Books

1001 Ways to Market Your Books, Sixth Edition by John Kremer.

This is a must for anyone trying to market their book, whether it's in print or an ebook. "Don't just read the book, memorize it," an agent once told me about Mr. Kremer's book.

You should know that publishing houses spend little or no money to market the bulk of their authors. Since about 80% of the books published never turn a profit all the marketing money goes to the big sellers. Even if your book is published, it must be carried by bookstores, who only stock a fraction of the books available to them. If you think you've won the battle once your book is on bookstore's shelves, you're wrong. Without aggressive promotion, sales will be slow or nonexistent and your book will be removed from the shelf in two to seven days. When that happens, your book has essentially reached the end of its life. So, you spent at least a year writing your book, maybe another two years finding a publisher and one to three years for the publisher to have a finished product. All the efforts you put into seeing your book in print, a minimum of four years of your life, can go down the tubes in a week.

If you are going to self-publish a print or ebook, then you have even more work to do. Now you have to overcome the stigma that people only self-publish because their book wasn't good enough for a publisher.

If all of this scares you, good. Hopefully you can turn that fear into action, marketing action. That's why it's so vital to have a strong and well-focused marketing plan.

Mr. Kremer's book will help you to achieve this. It explains the basics of marketing, how to put together a marketing plan, how to promote your book, traditional and nontraditional marketing techniques, working with bookstores, selling to schools and libraries, how to sell subsidiary rights, selling overseas and more.

    For Photographers

Magazines - I'm not much for how-to books on photography, except for the beginning photographer. Instead I subscribe to several professional magazines, such as Studio Photography And Design, to pick up some pointers (Studio Photography subscription information (920) 563-1769). Otherwise, as with all art mediums, I believe the secret is to just get out there and do it. Burn through a few thousand rolls of film, or fill a few hundred memory cards, and you'll learn more than any book can teach you.

Pocket Pal, A Graphic Arts Production Handbook; (You can also order it directly from: International Paper; 6400 Poplar Ave.; Memphis, TN 38197. Tell them you want the book and they will mail you an order form.) This book will tell you everything you need to know about the printing process. In fact, if you learn the contents of this book, you will know more about printing than most printers. This book has helped me to get better quality prints from printers. It also helped me when dealing with a printer that was trying to scam me by giving me an inferior print job. In the end he reran the job to meet my specifications. When I was a freelance photographer in California one of my clients called me out of the blue with a conference call because his print job looked bad. The photographs I had taken didn't look like the ten year old prints from their files, and it showed in the print job. The printer, who was the other person on the conference call, was trying to blame my photography for the problem. I knew my prints were fine, so I explained that the older prints had probably begun to fade, and told him how to match the old and new prints in the printing process. As the printer began to realize how much I knew about printing he became very meek. By the end of the conversation he was agreeing, sheepishly, with everything I was saying. He reran the job and everything turned out fine. This saved my client a lot of problems, allowed me to keep my fee and this client used me again in the future. The cost of this book has repaid me hundreds of times.

The Art Of Comic-Book Inking 2nd Edition by Gary Martin and Steve Rude. This book will teach you everything you need to know about inking comics, and a good deal of inside information about the comic industry.

They discuss the tools of the trade, brushes vs. pens, line weight, contour lines, feathering, crosshatching, secrets of sixteen well know inkers and much more.

There are also many examples of inking throughout the book, including not only what works, but what doesn't.

I'd recommend this book to anyone involved in any aspect of the comic book industry.

Artist's Way: A Spiritual Path to Higher Creativity by Julia Cameron and Mark Bryan. This is a wonderful book and after going just a little was through the book my artistic productivity skyrocketed.

Color Drawing Workshop by Bet Borgeson. This is a good overall colored pencil book, which includes forty lessons and 40 imaginative assignments and projects.
Colored Pencil Fast Techniques by Bet Borgeson. You will learn many ways to save time when working with colored pencils.
Drawing on the right side of the Brain by Betty Edwards. This was the first book to look at drawing in a totally new way. There are now several books similar to this on the market.
The Encyclopedia of Fantasy and Science Fiction Art Techniques by John Grant and Ron Tiner. Here you will find an incredible collection of techniques and exercises, and a great gallery at the end. This book is worth buying simply for the art work.
Graphic Design Cookbook: Mix & Match Recipes for Faster, Better Layouts by Leonard Koren and Wippo Meckler. I use this book to help design the layout of pages, newsletters, booklets and many other print and non-print publications and advertisements.
Painting Acrylics (First Step Series) by Vicki Lord. This book has a good variety of styles, and explains the basics of composition and acrylics.
Paper Tiger Books, including: Dream Makers: Six Fantasy Artists at Work edited by Martyn Dean. This book shows the work, and studios, of six artists, including: Bernie Wrightson, who does astounding pen and ink; Julek Heller and Charles Vess.
Illustrator's Reference Manuals by Chartwell Books, Inc. I have three of their books. These books have a model pose, then they photograph the model from three different angles and from all sides. They are wonderful reference works for artists.
Illustrator's Figure Reference Manual (Illustrators Reference Manuals)
Hands and Faces (Illustrators Reference Manuals)
Nudes (Illustrators Reference Manuals)

I get my creative inspiration from a variety of sources, including literature and art. Following are some writers and artists that are a constant inspiration to me.

Robert Mapplethorpe. I have always loved his black and white photographs. In his book Lady: Lisa Lyon, he show a variety of ways to photograph one model. It's very interesting to see the diversity he achieves.
Lois Greenfield. Her photographs freeze dancers in mid-air, showing poses that are astounding. You have to see Breaking Bounds: The Dance Photography of Lois Greenfield to believe it.
Olivia de Berardinis. An amazing painter of the erotic female form. I used to own the original piece of artwork you'll find on page 30 of her book, Let Them Eat Cheesecake: The Art Of Olivia Volume I.
Chris Achilleos. A great painter in the science fiction and fantasy genre. His book, Medusa, takes you step-by-step through several of his paintings, and shows you many others.
Luis Royo. He has a great imagination, and does a lot of work for Heavy Metal magazine. Take a look at his book Evolution.
Yoshitaka Amano. The way he uses paints will bend your mind. Look very closely for small hidden images in many of his paintings. If you're a fan of Anime or Manga, you'll love his work. One of my favorite books of his is The Art of Yoshitaka Amano: Hiten (Japanese Language Text).
Boris Vallejo. A great fantasy and science fiction illustrator, and a very good photographer too. His Fantasy Art Techniques book gives a lot of useful information.
Michael Whelan. A science fiction and fantasy illustrator beyond compare. A good collection of his work can be found in Michael Whelan's Works of Wonder.
Anais Nin. An amazing erotic writer. I would suggest starting with Little Birds.
Rainer Rilke. His poetry has always spoken to my heart. And if you think you had a dysfunctional family. His mother wanted a girl, so when he was young he had to dress and act like a girl, and answer to a girls name, his middle name, or his mother would ignore him. Take a look at Selected Poems of Rainer Maria Rilke.
